As a person who truly despises Taylor Swift, I truly despise that I enjoy this album.
That’s right. I’ve said it. I LIKE 1989 BY TAYLOR SWIFT. She is the queen of bubblegum pop that destroys every male celebrity she has dated. Though she has still kept up with her breakup and makeup songs, she has found a new sound that will make even the most hipster of hipsters rethink their anti-mainstream mindset. With producers like Imogen Heap, Greg Kurstin, who has worked with Tegan and Sara as well as Lily Allen, and Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic, how can you go wrong? Well, I’m saying she didn’t (except for possibly “Shake It Off”, but it’s still dang catchy).
Must listens from “1989” go beyond the singles, “Blank Space” and “Shake It Off.” “Bad Blood” is rumored to be about Katy Perry dating John Mayor, or some other petty drama, but the song still kicks some butt. You forget your listening to Taylor Swift when you belting out the lyrics about having some beef with someone. It’s like she gets you.
Another must listen for people who feel T.Swift is too mainstream for them is “Wildest Dreams.” One thing that should pop into your head is, “Is this Lana Del Rey???” It has those haunting tones that Lana Del Rey thrives on. “Wildest Dreams” definitely was inspired by Lana’s beautifully scary “Born to Die” album. It gives you goosebumps due to fear, but a smile due to the greatness.
“How to Get the Girl” sounds like this is supposed to be in The Little Mermaid soundtrack. It’s really just another catchy pop song, but SIGNIFICANTLY less poppy than “Shake It Off.” This is a song to help to remember you’re still listening to Taylor Swift, but in a good way. Everyone loves a good catchy pop song. This song, however is just a good pop song. (DANG YOU, TAYLOR SWIFT.)
