Letter Grade – B+
Ryan Hemsworth‘s debut album, Guilt Trips, steps beyond the bounds of electronic music. Infusing soul, R&B, hip hop, and electronic beats Hemsworth delivers an album that gets you on your feet and dancing before you know it. Hemsworth’s layered production is reminiscent of album contributor Baths, and some tracks bear a distinct likeness to Jamie xx’s work with Gil Scott Heron, delivering funky dance beats with meaning behind the lyrics. Along side the dance is a soulful down tempo side of the album. “Still Cold” is a beautiful two minute track featuring vocals from Baths, and a slow tune that perfectly samples music and creates a real gem in the first half of the album. The album lies somewhere between chillwave and R&B, it’s got the down tempo soul of Rhye and the upbeat mixing of Toro Y Moi in one album.
