Kate Marshall – Soko – “We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow” – I Thought I Was An Alien
What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To?
I was watching this really endearing video of 20 strangers that were paired up to kiss for the first time (trust me, you don’t get second hand embarrassment that you assume would come with watching that…check it out here) and about 30 seconds in, this hauntingly beautiful song chimes in with the line “if you’re not ready for love, how can you be ready for life” and I was instantly hooked to this french singer/songwriter. Paired with the video, the videographer and artist created such a charming and intimate moment I wasn’t really expecting at all.
Joelle Hernandez – Sevyn Streeter – “Next” – Live and Acoustic
Sevyn Streeter gave thisisrnb.com an exclusive, acapella performance of her new single Next. Her voice is like velvet! Though much different from the Sevyn we heard on It Won’t Stop, she is still giving life in this new song!
Kelly Ryan Burchard – Mark Mothersbaugh (Various Artists) – The Lego® Movie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
DEVO founding-father-turned-composer Mark Mothersbaugh created the playful symphonies that flit through the early Wes Anderson soundtracks but never has there been a project more suited to his blend of electro-fun/tender-grandiose-synthpop than the The Lego® Movie. Simultaneously danceable yet cinematically epic tracks like “Emmet’s Morning” will make you want to fit your entire shower routine into two minutes while “Submarines and Metal Beard” conjure up a Daft Punk robot adventure on the high seas. Instrumental pieces aside, the biggest thing you’ll take away from your experience is that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!! This song (and all three exclamation points) comes from indie darlings (barf) Tegan and Sara featuring the lyrical wildstyling of SNL’s Lonely Island crew. You laugh at the ridiculous hip-hop breakdowns (Blue skies, bouncy springs! We just named two awesome things!) yet find yourself strangely compelled to join up with a squad of plucky friends and take on the world during the choruses (Everything is cool when you’re part of a team! Everything is awesome, when we’re living our dream!). It sounds cheesy. And it is. And it’s AWESOME!!!
Billy Dries – Dan Deacon – “The Crystal Cat” – Spiderman Of The Rings
I don’t know if it’s just because we share the same dance moves (check them out here) but Dan Deacon just seems like the man these days. This song is pretty old, but it’s still totally dance punk and awesome, so give it a listen!
Kathleen McKeveny – Angel Olsen – Burn Your Fire For No Witness
