Stephanie Berlanga’s The way things go, is definitely a step in the right direction for this vocal powerhouse. Described, by many as playing “acoustic pop music” Berlanga’s EP definitely shows off her wide range and powerful vocals, the production on the album is amazing especially for someone who is an up and coming artist. The album gives a small insight into what Berlanga can do; she mixes various different genres, including some country, pop, acoustic, and some alternative rock. But, what falls short for her in particular is that she may unfortunately sound like many other female “acoustic pop artist” out there such as Colbie Caillat, and even some early Meg and Dia; there is not much that sets her apart from them. Structurally, and musically the songs are good, but they tend to fall short at the pre chorus/ chorus, there’s always a nice buildup during the verses but lack luster once entering the heart of the songs.. the chorus. Lyrically, she is very good, but more importantly she has more to grow lyrically and in finding herself as a musician. But, her music definitely gives a nod to the early to mid-2000s, “feeling good” acoustic music akin to Colbie Callait and Natasha Bedingfield. My personal favorite from the album is, ” Mine… All the time”; with all of this being said, I think if Berlanga were explore the content and context of her writing, making it more personal, as really hone her own sound then she will have a bright future ahead of her.
