Wacky Wednesday: Privateer Day

Saturday, April 16th Fell’s Point revisits its roots. Fell’s may have a raging night life, but more importantly the area has an incredible historic lineage tracing to the 1700’s. Fell’s Point Privateer Day celebrates this heritage. The event goes from 11a.m to 6p.m and is chock full of Privateery fun!

If you’re wondering what a privateer is, so was I. It’s different than a pirate. Privateers are given orders from the government to attack ships, a license to rob type of set up.

Explosions In The Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

As difficult as it is to believe, there was a time in history when Explosions in the Sky’s brand of post-rock was novel, exciting. Then again, other fresh ideas at the time of The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place’s release included the launch of iTunes and the U.S. planning an invasion of Iraq… dating the post-rockers, but not as much as the troupe of copy-cats have dated them. Point is, it’s been a while since EITS were in the heyday of sprawling, simplistic, post-rock masterpieces. Oh, how far they’ve fallen. It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention— this makes sense in regards to Take Care, Take Care, Take Care because it’s an album devoid

NBA Playoffs 2011

As the NBA Playoffs are approaching in the next couple of weeks, some teams in both conferences are getting prepared to take on the defending champions: the Los Angeles Lakers.  The Los Angeles Lakers have won the past two title in the 2009 and the 2010 seasons.  Which team will attempt to make a push in the 2011 playoffs to knock off the defending champs?  There are many teams that are capable of beating the Lakers, but come playoff time the Lakers have shown to excel against competition.  Stopping a two time defending champion during the playoffs is not an easy task, but some teams will look to make a stand come the post season.

Museum Monday: American Visionary Art Museum

The American Visionary Art Museum is always a quality museum outing. Full of quirky art and crazy shenanigans the museum provides visitors a chance to view something interesting and abnormal. Currently the museum is featuring the exhibit, “What Makes Us Smile?” which takes an interesting look at happy human emotion.

‘Smile’ was created by an all-star line up. The instillation is a brainchild of Matt Groening, creator of the Simpson’s, artist Gary Panter, a set designer for Pee Wee’s Playhouse and the museum’s founder, Rebecca Hoffberger. The exhibit features works by 90 artists. They’ve got cartoons, 3-D fun, scientific surprises and spunky art. The Visionary Art Museum is full of spanking cool art, and ‘What Makes Us Smile’ is a rad exhibit to check out.

Sports Saturday: Baltimore Orioles

The baseball gods must have been looking out for Marylanders on opening day at Camden Yards, as gorgeous weather graced Birdland, allowing the Orioles to defeat the Tigers 5-1. With a current record of 4-0, things seem to be looking up for the Birds, however; it is way too early in the season to get a little cocky. That’s why the Orioles need all the support they can get, as devoted fans are the ones that carry them on towards even more victories. Come down on April 18th to cheer on the Orioles as they return home to take on Minnesota. The game starts at 7:05pm, but we all know the crowd will gather at Pickles way earlier than that. Get your ticket, throw on some orange, and start screaming at the top of your lungs. Let’s keep this going Orioles!

Food Friday: Bull & Oyster Roast

If you are a senior or an alumni from Loyola, I’m sure you stopped by the annual Bull and Oyster Roast for a night of good friends and great food. On April 14th the Frederick Douglass Isaac Myers Maritime Park will be hosting the 2011 Friends Bull and Oyster Roast. With delicious food provided by Ryleigh’s Oyster, as well as a wide selection of Baltimore’s best ales at the hands of Clipper City Brewing, there is no way you will leave this event without a stomach filled with joy. Proceeds will go towards education programming at Fort McHenry, and will support K-12 curriculum and lesson plan development as well.

Theater Thursday: “West Side Story”

The ground-breaking musical debuted on Broadway in 1957 and has been running strong ever since, stopping at theaters all around the world.
