Staff Picks: Dries’ Best Albums of 2013

With his sophomore release, Blood Orange delivered an absolute masterpiece. The R&B meets disco groove of the album immediately captured me and drew me in. From the first track, “Chamkay”, to the closing, “Time Will Tell”, the album keeps the listener guessing, weaving in and out of multiple genres it gets almost anybody on their feet and dancing.

While their album came out earlier this year, The Neighbourbood’s I Love You is just now making its way into my Top 25 Most Played iTunes playlist. Their motley crew of electric, hip-hop and indie rock sound is something that is hard not to like. All the tracks on I Love You flow into each other so smoothly, and while this isn’t necessarily the album that makes you want to get up and dance, it is definitely worth a listen to, if you haven’t already.

By no means is Bloom a new release, but it is by far one of my most listened to albums in recent memory. Boasting the emerging ethereal/dream pop genre, Baltimore’s very own Beach House transcend the musical experience via their use of synthesized instruments and deep, emotion-fueled, whispering female vocals. Pick up this album and change your music listening experience; you won’t regret it.

Sky has been on the public radar for years now, she’s allegedly hooked up with Miley Cyrus, and got busted for drugs, and shed a pop star that didn’t start on Disney Channel!…Whats this? Billy’s pick is a pop album?… Freak yeah it is, this album rocks it out and delivers a sound the likes of which hasn’t been heard in a Pop album since the likes of Michael Jackson, or Madonna.

Review: Adding up the wasted hours – The Lonely Forest

The Lonely Forest

[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/the-lonely-forest/id264475829?uo=4″ title=”the lonely forest”]

Grade: A

The Lonely Forest, an indie rock band from Anacortes, Washington releases their fourth studio album,  Adding up the Wasted Hours on October 15, 2013. The album is a mix of indie rock and the influence of synthesizers to give it a unique sound. The introduction of synthesizers really enhances the sound of each and every song. The Lonely Forest though does not stray to far from from its indie roots. Adding up the Wasted Hours is similar to music from the Bombay Bicycle Club and Vampire Weekend. Every song on the album is a new journey that the listener is taken on.
