Road to a Championship: Jamal Barney

For the Loyola Greyhounds, Cormier, one of the key players to Patsos’ Scheme, would not be considered a threat if it wasn’t for the great asset that he has in his teammate Jamaal Barney. In his senior year, Guard Jamal Barney has become the LeBron James of the Loyola Greyhounds and takes command. Elected Captain for the team, the squad looks to him to play well and to carry the team with his partner in crime Dylon Cormier. In his two seasons with the Greyhounds, Barney has led the team in scoring with 18.1 and 12.6 points per game respectively. This year, MAAC Coaches chose Barney for the All-MAAC Second Team. This year, against Drexel and UMBC, Barney showed great maturation in his game. He learned to play it slow – but not too slow. He has become more patient and he has learned not to force his shots; rather, he creates open shots and open lanes.

Game Summary: Loyola Men’s Basketball, 52, St. Peter’s, 55

The Loyola Greyhounds fall to 3-3 losing to the St. Peter’s Peacocks, 55-52, at Reitz Arena.

The Greyhounds are now 2-2 for at home, with an 0-1 record on the road.

Against the Peacocks, Dylon Cormier, guard, was the only player in double digits with 11 points. Jamal Barney followed with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Robert Olson led the team in rebounds with 7.

It wasn’t enough to go up against the Peacocks. St. Peter’s had two players in double digits: Ryan Bacon, 10 points, and Jeron Belin, 16 points. Jeron Belin also led the team with 6 rebounds.

Road to a Championship: Dylon Cormier

Two men will lead Loyola Mens Basketball to a championship in the MAAC.

Dylon Cormier and Jamal Barney. Together, the hope of a MAAC Conference Championship and a NCAA run are present and alive.

First off, Dylon Cormier, Freshman Guard, has done a great job so far for the Greyhounds as the starting Point Guard. In his outings, Cormier has had a great command for the game, dictating plays well and controlling the atmosphere on the court. In many ways, Cormier works the ball as if a younger Derek Fischer or Steve Nash were present. When he played at now-defunct Cardinal Gibbons High school, he was chosen two times for the All-Baltimore selection. As he takes command as the starting point guard, Cormier will be looked at by opposing teams as a force to be reckoned with.

It’s that time of the year again. Soccer comes to an end and the next great sport here at Loyola takes the helm of the Athletic Program’s ship. Of course, I am talking about Loyola Basketball.
