Sports Saturdays: UAB Win Means Victory Beyond the Court

Sports SaturdayThe University of Alabama at Birmingham shocked the sports world on Thursday when they topped 3-seed Iowa State, 60-59, providing the first major upset of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

According to brackets submitted on ESPN.com, more people picked ISU to go all the way to the Final Four than picked them to lose to 14-seed UAB in the first game.

The major upset win speaks for itself, and obviously it was an emotional win for the UAB players.

“For us, it was just huge,” UAB junior Robert Brown said. “We come here, not just to play games, but to actually make some noise and to win some games. To be able to do that and win for Birmingham, win for Coach [Jerod] Haase, it’s a great feeling.”

Brown led all scorers in the upset win with 21 points.

However, the win means so much more for UAB than just advancing. For them, it was a deep feeling of achievement and euphoria that this program, its students and its fan base desperately needed.

Philadelphi-Huh?: Breaking Down The Eagles Moves

UnknownChip Kelly has been given near-full control of the Philadelphia Eagles, and has been on a free-agent and front office frenzy ever since.

Eagles fans have been biting their nails the last couple of days, agonizing over the flurry of moves Kelly has done in an attempt to restructure the team.

People all over the league are a little puzzled, and rightfully so, but it seems that there is a method to the madness. Whether it will work or not is another story entirely.

Here’s a summary of the Eagles’ moves thus far this offseason:

Out: RB LeSean McCoy, WR Jeremy Maclin, OG Todd Herremans, LB Trent Cole, CB Cary Williams.

In/Staying: LB Kiko Alonso, CB Byron Maxwell, RB Frank Gore, QB Mark Sanchez, LB Brad Jones.

Sports Saturdays: Dude, Where’s My Racecar?

Sports Saturday NASCAR just turned into an Ashton Kutcher comedy down in Morrow, Georgia as Team Xtreme Racing driver Travis Kvapil is left saying, “Dude, where’s my car?”

Kvapil’s No. 44 car was in a trailer in a hotel parking lot in Morrow, Georgia in preparation for this weekend’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. At 5:34am, the trailer, with the car and spare parts inside, was stolen.

Team Xtreme now finds themselves without a car for the race this weekend, and had to withdraw from the race Friday morning.

Kvapil reported the theft through Twitter while keeping a good sense of humor about him.

“Wow. Anyone near Atlanta find my stolen Cup car let me know! Unreal,” Kvapil first tweeted at 9:13am.

Greyhounds Defeat Hopkins in Thrilling OT Game

Sports Talk The 14th-ranked Loyola women’s lacrosse team battled against rival 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday night and emerged with a 12-10 overtime victory.

Seniors Hannah Schmitt and Annie Thomas headlined the Hounds’ success for the game. Schmitt led the Hounds with seven points on four goals and three assists. Kara Burke and Sydney Thomas, both seniors, added two goals and an assist a piece.

Annie Thomas, however, put herself in the record books thanks to an early assist to Burke, her 100th career assist. Thomas became the first Greyhound and just the 50th player in NCAA history to record 100 goals and 100 assists in a career.

Bringing Football Back To LA?

Sports Talk After an announcement on Thursday from the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders, we learned that there are three NFL teams considering the move to Hollywood from their current cities.

These three teams are the St. Louis Rams (which we already knew about), the Oakland Raiders (which we assumed), and the San Diego Chargers.

The Rams began pursuing a plan to possibly move to LA a little over a month back, but the Raiders and Chargers just sprung this on the NFL world.

Chargers fans and the people of the great city of San Diego are shocked and slightly betrayed by this news, especially since San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer created a task force with the sole purpose of finding ways to keep the Chargers in San Diego.

ASG: What’s The Point of All The Points?

Sports Talk In last night’s 2015 NBA All-Star Game from Madison Square Garden, the Western Conference All-Stars defeated the Eastern Conference All-Stars in a respectably low-scoring 163-158 contest. This was the highest scoring ASG in NBA history.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook received the ASG MVP award for his 41-point effort for the West, just one point shy of tying the all-time ASG record set by Wilt Chamberlin of 42 points.

This game featured everything from 3-pointers to dunks to more dunks to a rare appearance on the court from Carmelo Anthony (a tease for Knicks fans everywhere). The game has absolutely no meaning and purpose other than good fun through an offensive showcase. Nobody really cares to see any sort of defense or meaning in a game, right?
