The Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team has won twelve straight games to mark a perfect season thus far. The Greyhounds have a perfect record (4-0) in the Big East Conference as well. Seniors Grace Gavin and Mary Heneberry have led the team with scoring in the past two games. Gavin tallied her 200th career goal against Villanova, becoming the third player in Loyola University women’s lacrosse history to accomplish this task. Loyola’s 12-0 start is its best since the 2003 Final Four team. That team ended the regular season ranked No. 1 and the 12-game winning streak is also the longest since the 2003 team won 14 in a row.
The Women’s Lacrosse team have dominated their opponents in the 2011 season. Senior midfielder Cara Filipelli and junior goalie Kerry Stoothoff have really taken steps for the Greyhounds by turning the team around. Stoothoff is second in the conference and eighth nationally with a 7.63 goals against average, and senior Kellye Gallagher is 11th in Division I in both caused turnovers and ground balls per game. The senior class has really stepped up this season, and has not looked back. Loyola has now won nine BIG EAST weekly awards this season – five defensive and four offensive. The Greyhounds are the only BIG EAST team to sweep the awards through seven weeks of honors.
The Women’s Lacrosse team has been on a roll this season as they have remained undefeated. The Greyhounds continue action on Wednesday April, 19 when they take on rival Georgetown.
The No. 19 Men’s Lacrosse team started out with the season with a three game winning streak. The Greyhounds opened up the season with a thrilling come from behind victory over the United States Naval Academy. They then went on to beat local rival Towson and Bellarmine who is in the same conference as the Hounds. The next three games were not so great. Losses to Duke, Denver, and Air Force set the Greyhounds back with an overall record of 3-3. However, seniors Chris Palmer and Matt Langan really turned things around. The Greyhounds have won three straight games with wins over Mt. St. Mary’s, Ohio State, and Fairfield. The Greyhounds now have an overall record of 6-3 and must beat Hobart to make the ECAC tournament in Denver, Colorado.
The Men’s Lacrosse team has three regular season games left, with Georgetown, Hobart, and Johns Hopkins. If the Greyhounds can pull out a win over Hobart they will most likely be the second seed for the ECAC tournament. However, taking one game at a time the men’s team has really focused on Georgetown. The Greyhounds take on the Hoyas on April 16, in Washington D.C.
