Grade: B+

Matt Koelsch & The Allies’s sophomore album Epic Summer is just delightful. Each song on the album has an attitude of its own, clearly portraying the amazing writing skills of Matt Koelsch. For those who have never heard their music, it’s a mix of blues, folk, rock and country which is represented in this album. But, this album definitely left me wanting more in the bad kind of way. Many of the songs seem to just fall off in the end, and many songs were mid-tempo and didn’t diverge from that. Matt Koelsch has an amazing voice and The Allies are clearly very talented instrumentalist; throughout the album I was hoping that they would try to take some risk with their songs, overall they just seemed to be playing it safe, which can be a good or bad thing. It is only their second album so they still having growing that they can do when it comes to developing their already evident personal sound.
