Tourism Tuesday: Fort McHenry

Looking for a bit of Baltimore, history and… song? There’s no place quite like Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the birthplace of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” for the perfect mix of these.

Built to defend the Port of Baltimore from enemy attacks after American won its independence, Fort McHenry played a crucial role during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814. When visiting the fort, you’ll get to view the film “The Defense of Fort McHenry” and see the barracks, the uniforms and even partake in the daily flag change. You’ll also get to tour the fort on your own.

Whether you visit the fort during a special event, like Civil War Weekend, National Flag Day, a morning bird walk or you take a trip on a regular day, you are bound to learn and experience Baltimore and the city’s pride.
