It is definitely hard to see through the biases associated with movie sound track albums. Why spend money on a collection of juxtaposed songs that seem but lost independent of their movie origin? However, with the release of the new Coen Brothers film Inside Lleywn Davis, my perceptions have been swayed. Based in NYC circa 1960, the film follows the character of Lleywn Davis–a vagabond folk musician surfing couches of the East Village struggling to demonstrate his talent and find his place in life. The film’s soundtrack was created like any other studio album and more so. Tracks include appearances by Mumford & and Sons, JT, and The Punch Brothers, all lead by notable music producer and composer T-Bone Burnett. However, don’t let all these big names shadow Oscar Isaac, the lead actor and recording musician for multiple tracks including one of my favorites “Hang me, Oh Hang me”. If you enjoy folk music, or just good art in general, both the sound track and film are definitely worth checking out.

Aer is a great mix of indie, hip hop, and reggae rock all blended into one. These guys can make songs that are perfect for chilling, relaxing and jamming out with your best buds. They are a fairly recent band that I would highly recommend to anyone that is looking for something new to listen to.

I recently bought tickets to Firefly Festival this summer and apart from it making me completely broke, it has encouraged me to listen to music that I had never listened to before. With over 100 bands performing, one band that I’ve really fallen in love with are the Arctic Monkeys. Their music is different than what I usually listen to, and its been on repeat for the last couple of weeks.

Alicia Keys used to be my favorite artist for the sole reason that she created The Element of Freedom. This album is incredible! In every song you can hear her heart and soul. Songs like How It Feels To Fly, Love is My Disease and Wait Til You See My Smile can make you fall in love with love and with Alicia’s music. If only she release something half as good sometime soon!

This is a major throwback but its been on my playlist recently. Its such a classic song with great lyrics. The singing is a bit subpar– but hey, its Brandy, what do you expect? Everyone loves and oldie but goodie right? Right!
